Best Sudoku apps for iPhone and iPod touch

Chances are, you’re fully aware that the number-placement logic game Sudoku is massively popular.

But if you’ve been in a cave the past few years and need evidence, look no further than the 18 (and counting) versions of Sudoku apps available in the iTunes App Store, ranging in price from 99 cents to $10.

If you’re a fan of Sudoku, which do you buy? Unfortunately, the current state of the App Store doesn’t allow for demo versions of software, leaving you to take a wild guess based on a short description and a few screenshots.

But Macworld is here to help: I tested every iPhone Sudoku app and picked out those worthy of your iPhone’s screen. (It was a tough job, but somebody had to do it.)

Sudoku on Microsoft Xbox LIVE Arcade

Sudoku to launch on Xbox LIVE Arcade Q2 2008 with innovative multi-player

Merscom announced it will be publishing this Spring Buku Sudoku, the first Sudoku game for the Xbox LIVE Arcade system. The first, and only, Sudoku title for the Xbox LIVE Arcade, Buku Sudoku brings the worldwide Sudoku phenomenon to the Xbox LIVE Arcade while adding innovative competitive and cooperative play features.

Buku Sudoku uses three key features of the XBLA platform to create the best console Sudoku experience. First, the native HD resolution of the 360 allows for an easy to read grid with pencil marks. Secondly, the controller’s triggers and thumbsticks make for a very fast entry method, a usual barrier with electronic Sudoku games. Thirdly, the unique XBLA service allows for multiplayer experiences never before witnessed in a Sudoku game. All of this is wrapped up in a cohesive graphical style that manages to offer something for all users. In a similar fashion, multiple puzzle sizes, difficulties, control schemes, and tutorials offer appeal to any player whether totally new or a veteran.
“We are really excited about the release of Buku Sudoku, as it takes the proven and popular gameplay of Sudoku to a new level. It will appeal not only to Sudoku fans but anyone who loves a great gameplay experience,” said Kirk Owen, CEO at Merscom. “Given the popularity of Sudoku on other platforms and the quality of this game, we expect Buku Sudoku to be a phenomenal hit.”

Seven Seas Sudoku Debuts at WorldWinner.com

WorldWinner's Original Strategy Game Provides a Twist on the Popular Puzzle Pastime

Ahoy, matey! Sudoku fans can now walk the plank and hit the high seas with the latest addition to WorldWinner’s games portfolio. The company today announced the launch of Seven Seas Sudoku, an online cash competition version of the popular puzzle game with a pirate-themed twist. WorldWinner is a subsidiary of FUN Technologies Inc. (TSX:FUN) (AIM:FUN) and the leading provider of online game competitions for cash and prizes.

Seven Seas Sudoku is already proving to be a popular puzzler on WorldWinner; more than 12,000 games have been played in the initial days since its launch.

“WorldWinner created Seven Seas Sudoku in response to player demand for an interactive cash competition version of Sudoku, one the world’s most popular puzzle games,” said Peter Blacklow, president of WorldWinner. “Creating engaging online versions of popular offline favorites, such as SCRABBLE and Sudoku, is a key component of WorldWinner’s strategy to introduce a new audience of board and puzzle game fans to online cash competitions.”

Conceptualized and developed by WorldWinner, Seven Seas Sudoku is based on the universal rules of Sudoku. Players compete against one another by filling a 9x9 game board with numbered coins during each five-minute game. Participants accumulate points – booty for their treasure chests – by correctly completing a row, column or 3x3 square. If the clock runs out before players complete the entire game board, all empty squares are filled with Jolly Roger icons, resulting in scoring penalties. The player with the most loot in his or her treasure chest at the end of the game wins. Fill ‘er up, Captain!

Seven Seas Sudoku is available to players exclusively on WorldWinner.com and its partner sites, including AOL Games, GSN, MSN Games and Pogo.com.
