Hudson Entertainment brings Wii owners face to face with spirits of the dead in 'Calling'

Hudson Entertainment will bring players face to face with death as they roam an alternate existence in an attempt to survive Calling. The adventure horror title is set to be published by Hudson Entertainment, the North and South American publishing arm of HUDSON SOFT, and will be exclusive to Nintendo Wii in 2010.

“Players will be asked to use their wits and senses to survive the world of Calling,” said Mike Pepe, Director of Marketing of Hudson Entertainment. “It is a game that revolves around real people and real emotions – no chain saws or suits of armor. The game is traditional survival horror at its finest.”

In Calling, players begin by visiting a mysterious “Black Page” website with a simple number counter. Some say it is a bridge to something sinister; the counter indicating the number of people who have died after visiting the page. It is said that people who have visited the site and witness a certain event are drawn into a mysterious space compiled of the memories of the dead - the space between life and death. Someone or something is drawing the living there for a reason, and it is up to the player to discover the horrifying truth. In order to do so, players will use various equipment including flash lights, phones, and other items to navigate and escape the Calling.

Throughout the game players will visit various parts of the Calling world. Memories of houses, schools, hospitals and more bring players closer to either an escape or an untimely death. Players will solve puzzles, search and interact with objects, and ultimately try to avoid the inhabitance of this alternative existance.

Last video for The Path horror video game released on 18th March

the path horror gameTale of Tales publishes launch trailer of soon-to-be-released indie horror game

One more week and then The Path will be released. To ease the pain and whet the appetite, Tale of Tales has released a video trailer that clearly sets the tone for an unusual experience.

"At first we were going to make a traditional launch trailer." explain creators Auriea Harvey & Michael Samyn, "You know, a little movie that explains the narrative premise of the game, shows some gameplay and then serves some kind of challenge. And our first sketches were just fine.
But then we started cutting things up and working with the recordings of [composer] Jarboe reading the original fairy tale. The end result much more clearly reflects the experience of the game: strange, disjointed and completely open for interpretation while simultaneously feeling very comfortable and intimate."

The intriguing videoclip is currently on display at http://ThePath-game.com in Standard and High Definition resolutions.
It is composed exclusively with video footage grabbed from the game. The music and voice acting is by Jarboe.

While created in familiar realtime 3D and designed with accessible controls, The Path offers a unique experience. Its design downplays the value of both advanced technology and sophisticated gameplay in favour of focusing entirely on emergent storytelling and the visceral experience of "being there".

"We're not really doing anything new," Samyn & Harvey point out, "we're just removing the parts of game design that we feel stop the medium from growing and expanding. Sure, some purist gamers may not appreciate The Path. But that's only to be expected. We want The Path to be a game for people who have been neglected by the industry. People who sullenly stood by while their boyfriend was shooting alien monsters and their grandmother was collecting virtual diamonds. A game that allows you to explore, to fantasize, and to grow."

The Path is a modern retelling of Little Red Ridinghood. The player controls six sisters who are sent out, one by one, to bring their sickly grandmother a loaf of bread and a bottle of wine. The path to her house is straight and short and no obstacles prevent you from swiftly completing your mission. But what about that forest along the way?
Mother told you not to enter it! But isn't that how the story goes?
Aren't you supposed to meet the wolf?

Tale of Tales is an independent games studio founded by Auriea Harvey and Michael Samyn, located in Belgium. The music in the Path was composed by Jarboe. Previous projects by Tale of Tales include The Endless Forest and The Graveyard (nominated for the Independent Games Festival later this month).

What make a horror video game scary?

alone in the dark horror gameGame Set Watch asks the question...

Horror games have had an interesting, if not bumpy, past. The last 20 years has seen the genre develop, die suddenly, return to life like a zombie, and escalate to mainstream proportions, surpassing even horror movies as the hair raising entertainment medium of choice.

My first experience with the horror genre was on the PC, with Hugo’s House of Horrors: an adventure game that had its tendrils primarily wrapped around the pillar of horror, no matter the snippets of humor that managed to rear its ugly head.

The Path turns beta - Tale of Tales' artistic horror game is almost done

path video gameAfter two and a half years of intense work, Auriea Harvey and Michael Samyn release a sigh of relief: their little baby is ready to see the light of day. The Path is a gloomy interactive exploration in realtime 3D of the fairy tale of Little Red Ridinghood set in the present day.

And now, just as the new year has begun, the production has achieved beta stage. A release date will be revealed soon.

path video game
"We have not fully recovered from those final six months of crunching yet. But when we see what we have created, we can't help but feel pride and joy. We live together as a couple, and we work together day in and day out. Long days, working until the small hours, for months and months on end. We wouldn't recommend it. And we may never do it again. But we have done it now! And we are glowing like fresh parents: The Path is great and wonderful! Anyone who disagrees is dead."
The first time The Path was introduced to the public was at the Game Developers Conference of 2007, when a teaser video was released. One year later, a "vertical slice" playable demo of the game was selected for the Independent Games Festival 2008 -and another videoclip was released, containing gameplay footage. The following nine months -briefly interrupted by the release of the controversial art/non-game The Graveyard- were dedicated to expanding the demo to a full game, with the aid of animator Laura Raines Smith, composer Jarboe, sound designer Kris Force and technical artist Hans Zantman.

In the mean time, fabulous graphic designer Marian Bantjes created a new hand-drawn logo, which is being revealed now to celebrate the occasion.
