Grand Theft Auto team used the pub for meetings

GTA chinatown nintendo dsThe developer of the DS version of Grand Theft Auto has spoken of its key to success - regular pub meetings.

In an interview with The Times, Rockstar Leeds boss Gordon Hall spoke of the development process behind DS title Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, which included regular meetings in the pub.

"Rule one is that every other meeting takes place down the pub, where we can talk and the ideas flow," he said. "See that road over there? There's a pub up the hill that'd go out of business if it wasn't for us."

Another important factor was ensuring the game was play tested by everyone: "Once a week, we have a day where we stop work, and everybody in the office, my PA included, will play a portion of the game we're working on at random.

"We may only have 16 people working on a title at any one time, but as far as I'm concerned, all 80 people here are games makers. We listen to everybody's comments and try to make improvements accordingly.

"Over the two years we've been working on Chinatown Wars, everyone you see in here has played every single section of the game. We all know it inside out."

Developed by the award-winning studio Rockstar Leeds in conjunction with series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is available exclusively for the Nintendo DS.

"Our teams set out to create the most massive and intense action experience on the DS," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. "Rockstar Leeds has innovated on what the 'Grand Theft Auto' series has stood for and the end result is something we’re incredibly proud to share with our fans."

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is an entirely original entry into the critically acclaimed Grand Theft Auto series, and brings a new level of interactivity to the world of Liberty City. Players will assume the role of Huang Lee, a member of the Chinese Triad crime syndicate who must navigate his way through the streets to uncover the truth behind an epic tale of crime and corruption.

IGN.com said, "Believe me...this game is the business."

G4.com wrote, “To call Chinatown Wars feature-laden would be an understatement on par with calling glaciers slow...Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars hits the DS on March 17th and with it comes a whole new rap sheet for Nintendo's handheld…Chinatown Wars looks pretty sick."

Official Nintendo Magazine recently reviewed the game, saying “With the arrival of Chinatown Wars, the DS can now boast a GTA title that's every bit as compelling, impressive and fun to play as its home console cousins.”

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the Nintendo DS is rated M for Mature by the ESRB. For more information, please visit www.rockstargames.com/chinatownwars.

Second hand video game sales hit new game purchases and the developers don't like it!

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown WarsTake-Two has said that it is frustrated by the sale of second hand product through specialist chains such as GameStop.

The company is increasingly looking to online solutions to combat the loss of sales due to pre-owned goods, with the forthcoming release of Grand Theft Auto: The Lost and the Damned an example of breathing life back into an older game.

"GameStop continues to aggressively push their used game business, which is having a meaningful negative impact on sales of new games," noted analyst Doug Creutz, following a meeting with Take-Two CEO Ben Feder this week.
"Management is frustrated with this trend and is examining ways to ameliorate the problem, which includes strategies around online play and downloadable content which extend the lifespan of AAA titles."
Nintendo products are also high on Take-Two's agenda, with the company closely monitoring the performance of GTA: Chinatown Wars on the DS.
"The upcoming launch of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for the DS will be an important test of Take-Two's ability to make inroads on Nintendo's wildly successful DS and Wii platforms," said Creutz
"Nintendo wants their platforms to appeal to all gamer segments (not just casual/family) and views Take-Two’s IP as an important driver of core gamer interest."
