Popular World War II Video Game Wolfenstein RPG comes to iPhone and iPod Touch

Wolfenstein RPGEA Mobile announce Wolfenstein RPG, a new take on the classic game originally created by id Software, on the App Store. Wolfenstein RPG for iPhone and iPod Touch, developed exclusively for EA, is a turn-based role playing action game where players battle Axis soldiers, navigate through mysterious underground tunnels, and battle a horde of monsters to take down the Axis’ diabolical Paranormal Division.
"Working on mobile platforms has allowed us to rapidly evolve our games - Wolfenstein RPG is the fourth generation of our turn-based titles under EA Mobile, and all the experience and lessons from our award winning DOOM RPG and Orcs & Elves games are distilled in it,” said John Carmack, founder and technical director at id Software. “The App Store version is dramatically better than on any other platform, with by an order of magnitude more media in high resolution graphics and audio, all rendered fast and smooth with hardware OpenGL graphics acceleration."
In Wolfenstein RPG, players can save the world as Sergeant B.J. Blazkowicz, leader of an elite U.S. fighting unit, who is imprisoned by the evil Axis Army and must annihilate enemies in 9 action-packed levels. Utilizing the innovative Multi-Touch user interface of iPhone and iPod touch, players tap to pick up weapons to hit, kick, dynamite and destroy super soldiers, zombies and the shadowy Harbinger of Doom; swipe to control fighting and walking motions; and use the accelerometer to propel the sniper rifle into action. Discover objects and books to affect existing capabilities and concoct mysterious syringes to improve B.J.’s performance skills. Strategize carefully to be triumphant against the Axis’ diabolical Paranormal Division!

"Both the DOOM RPG and Orcs & Elves franchises created by id Software were critically-acclaimed titles and fans will experience the same level of enjoyment with EA Mobile's Wolfenstein RPG," said Adam Sussman, VP Worldwide Publishing for EA Mobile. "With this RPG take on the game, fans of Wolfenstein now have a chance to battle the Axis Army in a new way."

Wolfenstein RPG is available globally on the App Store for iPhone and iPod touch or at http://www.itunes.com/appstore, or by visiting www.eamobile.com.

DOOM, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, QUAKE and Wolfenstein have new owners as Bethesda buys id Software

fallout gameBrings together two of world's best game studios. Library of powerhouse franchises will include DOOM, Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, QUAKE, Wolfenstein and RAGE

ZeniMax Media Inc., parent company of noted game publisher Bethesda Softworks, today announced it has completed the acquisition of legendary game studio, id Software, creators of world-renowned games such as DOOM, QUAKE, Wolfenstein, and its upcoming title, RAGE.

The acquisition by ZeniMax Media joins together two of the finest, most respected videogame developers in the world, combining the first person shooter (FPS) expertise of id Software with acclaimed role playing game (RPG) developer Bethesda Game Studios – creators of the 2008 Game of the Year, Fallout 3, and the 2006 Game of the Year, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Bethesda Softworks will publish the titles of id Software other than upcoming releases previously committed to other publishers.

Founded in 1991, id Software established itself as an industry leader with some of the best-selling and most critically acclaimed video games of all time. id Software created the original first-person shooter, Wolfenstein 3D, and subsequently set new standards in the genre with the blockbuster releases of its DOOM and QUAKE titles. In addition, id Software developed cutting edge, proprietary technology with the id Tech engine which powers many notable FPS titles, and continues to make great advances in game technology under the direction of John Carmack, one of the country’s technology leaders and a member of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS) Hall of Fame.

Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software, commented on the transaction: “This was a unique opportunity to team with a smart, sophisticated publisher like Bethesda Softworks where the interests of the studio and the publisher will be fully aligned in the development and marketing of our titles. In addition, we will now have financial and business resources to support the future growth of id Software, a huge advantage which will result in more and even better games for our fans.”

id Software will continue to operate as a studio under the direction of its founder, John Carmack. No changes will be made in the operations of id Software in the development of its games. All the principals at id Software have signed long-term employment contracts, assuring they will continue in their roles developing games at the studio.

“This puts id Software in a wonderful position going forward,” said John Carmack, who will continue to serve in his current role as Technical Director. “We will now be able to grow and extend all of our franchises under one roof, leveraging our capabilities across multiple teams while enabling forward looking research to be done in the service of all of them. We will be bigger and stronger, as we recruit the best talent to help us build the landmark games of the future. As trite as it may be for me to say that I am extremely pleased and excited about this deal, I am."

Robert Altman, the founder, Chairman & CEO of ZeniMax Media stated, “We, along with many others, consider id Software to be among the finest game studios in the world, with extraordinary design, artistic and technical capabilities. They have demonstrated, repeatedly, that rare ability to create franchise properties that are critical and commercial successes. Our intention is to make sure id Software will continue to do what they do best – make AAA games. Our role will be to provide publisher support through Bethesda Softworks and give id Software the resources it needs to grow and expand.”

ZeniMax Media Inc, which is privately held, was founded in 1999 to create quality interactive entertainment products to meet the growing worldwide demand. The Company is headquartered in Rockville, MD and maintains offices in Hunt Valley, MD, London and Tokyo. Among its wholly owned subsidiaries are Bethesda Softworks, a premier publisher of video games, Vir2L Studios which develops games for the casual market, and ZeniMax Online Studios, a studio dedicated to massively multi-player online games (MMOG).

Bethesda Game Studios, the development group at ZeniMax Media, is one of the top video game studios in the world. Its most recent release, Fallout 3, was the 2008 winner of more than 60 Game of the Year awards, including The Associated Press, Official Xbox Magazine, Yahoo, PC Gamer, IGN, Game Critics Awards, Game Developer Choice Awards, and Gamespy. Bethesda also created the 2006 PC and Xbox 360 Game of the Year, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and the 2002 PC and Xbox Game of the Year, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Bethesda Game Studios has created 2 of the 10 best games of all time, Fallout 3 and Oblivion, on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms, as reported by the industry scoring system found at www.metacritic.com and www.gamerankings.com.

Developer of Duke Nukem and Wolfenstein - 3D Realms goes bust

Duke Nukem and Wolfenstein bustVeteran games developer 3D Realms has closed down because of a lack of funds.
Founded in 1987, the firm popularised the concept of shareware gaming and published the seminal Duke Nukem and Wolfenstein 3D first-person shooters.

The company was working on a follow-up title, Duke Nukem Forever, which after being in development for 12 years has become the object of industry derision.

Publisher Take-Two says it will no longer fund development of the game but retains rights to the title.
"We can confirm that our relationship with 3D Realms for Duke Nukem Forever was a publishing arrangement, which did not include ongoing funds for development of the title," said Take-Two's Alan Lewis in a statement.

Online games hours dropping...

Statistics show an overall drop in hours played for top ten games

Average hours spent by Xfire users daily playing World of Warcraft have dropped by nearly 18 per cent from August numbers, according to data from the community and data application for the month of September.

It sets a pattern which is mirrored across many of the other top ten MMOs, with second-placed Guild Wars showing a 13 per cent drop and third-placed Silkroad Online falling over 27 per cent.

One of the likely main reasons for the drop is the end of the summer holidays for schools and colleges across Europe and the US.

Other key MMO titles remained relatively static, with MapleStory, Flyff and Eve Online taking fourth, fifth and sixth places respectively. Lord of the Rings Online remained in eighth place.

The top ten first-person shooters have also fallen across the board, although there was no change in the top five most played titles.

Call of Duty 2 Multiplayer and Counter-Strike Source took the top slots convincingly, although they lost around 12 per cent and 18 per cent of their audiences respectively.

Battlefield 2, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and Counter-Strike 1.6 rounded off the top five.

September's bonus statistic compared all World War II games, and unsurprisingly Call of Duty 2 Multiplayer was also top of that list, with other Call of Duty titles also taking third and fourth places.

Xfire is an application which tracks gameplay statistics for its user base of over 8 million, based mostly in Europe and North America.
