'Rat Race' Funnyman Hopes PlayStation 3's First Sitcom Video Game Fills Comedy Void

There are no jokes about black albino people in the upcoming PlayStation 3 sitcom video game "Rat Race."

This fact was confirmed by MTV News yesterday during an interview with comedian Victor Varnado, head writer of "Rat Race" and veteran stand-up comic, who has kicked off some of his televised routines making jokes about the fact that he is a black albino.

"We don't have any black albino characters in the game, so they would seem like a--holes if they made jokes about it," he said during an interview to promote his involvement in the bold new game.

Varnado is doing voice work for three characters — and screeching the role of a monkey — as well as serving as head writer and voice-acting director for Super-Ego Games' "Rat Race," a workplace video game comedy in the vein of "The Office," which will be rolled out as a series of downloadable, playable episodes on the PS3 this winter.

A press release touting Varnado's involvement mentions his connection to TV shows such as "Saturday Night Live," "Late Night With Conan O'Brien," "Flight of the Conchords" and "My Name Is Earl." (Watch one of his routines on his MySpace page.)

But in his interview with MTV News, Varnado flashed some other credentials that suit him well for his jobs on the upcoming game. "I've had a lot of experience with games that were meant to be funny," he said. "Anytime I can find a game that has a particularly unusual sense of humor, I play it." He said the text adventure "Loom" was an early comedy-game favorite. Other old adventure games stood out. More recently, he found the cutesy PSP game "Loco Roco." Also handy: "When I was in high school, I used to make video games — mostly stupid. I made a maze game where a blob would chase you down a maze. I tried to make a 3-D game; I could never get it to work."

So if he knows games as a player and an amateur programmer, surely he must know the problem: There aren't many comedy games these days. There used to be more, a slew of joke-filled adventures such as "The Secret of Monkey Island" and "Grim Fandango." In Varnado's view, some of the very things that games have gotten better at — visuals and interactivity — have lessened the need for developers to keep players engaged with humor. Those adventure games were popular in their day, but technology improved. "As soon as they got to the point where graphics got better, games got less funny," he said. Better gameplay also removed any outright need for a game to be funny. "If you looked at early games, they had very few game mechanics. Look at [1983's interactive cartoon/game] 'Dragon's Lair.' Not many gameplay mechanics, but it's great to look at and the comedy is funny."

"Rat Race" is an attempt to solve all this, taking a somewhat different path from the last significant game comedy attempt, the revived "Sam & Max" series, which just started a second season of downloadable PC point-and-click adventures. Super-Ego Games President Greg Easley recently told the Web site PS3Fanboy.com that his company's game will incorporate some traditional game mechanics, including stealth and shooting sequences.

"I can tell you that the jokes that work best in the gameplay are usually the more cerebral stuff," he said, referring to puns and wordplay and stuff that feels clever. By cerebral, he doesn't mean dry. Offering an example of his own style of cerebral comedy, he recounts the following gag from his stand-up: "I say, 'I'm a black albino, ladies. You know what I'm talking about: all the benefits of being black without the disappointed looks from your parents.' See, that joke, in order to make it funny, you have to put the last piece in it yourself." In "Rat Race" gameplay, some of this kind of thing will be appearing in dialogue-driven mini-games that include hundreds of possible lines that may be heard depending on how the player performs a gameplay task.

In the games non-interactive cut-scenes, however, he promises "wilder and zanier stuff." Some of that material seemed to have been released to the Web in October when four apparent trailers for the game, featuring zany non-interactive workplace scenes and ending in title cards promoting the game, appeared on GameTrailers.com. And for the most part, those "Rat Race" clips were ... trashed. "It's a game where you tell bad jokes?" one commenter wrote.

"Here's what really happened," said Varnado, who followed the reaction. "Some of the stuff that was leaked onto GameTrailers was some of the stuff meant for internal use, not something that was a finished product that would go out." He said some of the material was created to test the game's technology and didn't represent the finished product. "That isn't our best foot forward," he said. Only the video about the roach-bait commercial had gone through the proper approval process. And that one, he said, got the most positive response. "We'll make sure that what we put out next is something we've gone over and that we're proud of."

Varnado is confident that bad jokes will be weeded out well before gamers experience them. "Rule number one: It has to serve the game. Rule two: It has to be funny. Rule three: It has to be in character." And any joke that only gets laughed at by the person who wrote it won't be making the cut.

The first episode of "Rat Race," which will be "based around a Japanese toy that has to be redone for an American market because the toy is a little over-the-top violent," is set for release this winter via the PS3's PlayStation Network download service.

Seniors urged to take up video games

Kids, go do your homework and hand over those PlayStation controls to your grandparents.

Playing such games helps keep the minds of senior citizens sharp and their hands active, reducing their risk of ending up with Alzheimer's Disease, said Health Ministry parliamentary secretary Datuk Lee Kah Choon.

"Senior citizens should engage in mental activities. A good way is to use the PS3 (PlayStation3) or play other computer or video games as it would help to keep them alert and maintain the dexterity of their hands.

"They can also play bridge and mahjong as long as they are not gambling illegally," he told reporters after opening a public forum themed The Realities of Life with Dementia organised by the Alzheimer's Disease Foundation Malaysia Penang AD Support Group at the Caring Society Complex here Sunday.

In his speech, Lee said it was important to disseminate information on the disease, which is associated with ageing, to the public as early as possible so that they would be prepared to face such situations.

"Patients would have a chance to plan together with their families and decide how they want to be cared for.

"Awareness about the disease also helps people to be more alert to the signs, and they can seek early treatment and help," he said.

Sony to cut chip production costs

Joint venture with Infineon will help stem department losses

Sony has announced a partnership with Infineon Technologies for future production of DRAM chips, which should have an impact on the semiconductor unit's fortunes.

The division, which also makes processors for the PlayStation 3, posted a JPY 10 billion (USD 86 million) loss last year according to a report on Bloomberg.

The deal will take the form of a Tokyo-based joint venture and will work initially on chips for consumer electronics goods, such as cameras and mobile phones.

The move follows not long after rumours that Sony is planning to sell the production line for the PS3's Cell processor to Toshiba, and comes at a point at which the company is under increasing pressure to announce a price cut in Europe for the flagship console.

PlayStation 3 magazine PSU3 merges with long-standing Play

Imagine Publishing chooses to focus on its core PlayStation brands for 2008 and beyond

Imagine Publishing today announced the merger of PSU3 with Play, effective immediately.

The move comes after careful deliberation into the state of both the PlayStation and the related magazine market which has not seen the significant growth shown by Xbox 360 titles. With the PlayStation magazine market unlikely to improve in the short to medium term, the decision was taken to merge the two titles in order to focus resources on what is Imagine’s market-leading PlayStation title.

The merger will see key staff from PSU3 move over to Play to bolster its already talented team, and will see some of PSU3’s innovative features incorporated into Imagine’s bestselling independent title and improve Play’s editorial package in time for what is hoped to be a stronger 2008.

Nick Jones, Editor in Chief of Imagine’s PlayStation titles commented, “The fact is that the PlayStation market is at an all-time low and this has been reflected in the sales of PlayStation magazines. With a lower than expected PlayStation 3 installed user base, no price reduction of the hardware, and few triple-A games until much later next year, we have taken the decision to merge PSU3 with Play and focus on our most long-standing games brands and also our new launches.”
“By concentrating on Play, our premium PlayStation multiformat magazine, and of course PowerStation the market-leading tips and cheats title, we will be able to ensure that Imagine stays ahead of its competitors and remains an attractive opportunity for games publishers and advertisers alike.”

Issue 159 of Play will be the first issue to incorporate PSU3 and will be on sale on 19 October. Existing subscribers of PSU3 will be offered Play as a substitute.

Imagine Publishing is one of the UK’s fastest growing consumer specialist publishers. Formed in May 2005, it now publishes 20 magazines and 20 websites in the videogames, computing, entertainment and photography markets. An Imagine magazine is purchased every ten seconds.

BUYERS GUIDE TO VIDEO GAME CONSOLES

There is now a video games console to suit practically every need, taste and budget. But the range and diversity of gaming systems, never mind the games themselves is a daunting prospect to the uninitiated.

Today’s systems offer much more. Are you an online gamer? Are childrens’ games a priority? Want to take full advantage of that 50-inch flat-screen plasma TV? Or are you just looking for cheap hassle-free fun with friends and family?

Conclusion:

Nintendo Wii is the best console for families

Nintendo DS Lite is the best handheld console

PlayStation 2 is the best budget console

Xbox 360 is the best console for online gaming

The new PlayStation 3 is the best high-definition video games console

Once you’ve decided what you want the console for and which one to get, where next? Here are the key things to keep in mind to buy a games console in complete confidence:

1. Watch out for worthless extras

Many shops offer bundle deals in addition to selling stand-alone consoles. Typically they throw a load of games in for “free”. While the savings can be substantial with such deals they can also be illusionary. Are the “free” games on offer actually worth having? If you are not careful you could end up spending more than you intended on games you will never play so check them out first.

2. Make sure all the essentials are included

Do not assume everything you need to get your console working will come in the box. Extras you may need to purchase separately may include additional handsets for multiplayer games; subscriptions for online gaming; and special cables which will boost the audio and visual performance of your unit.

3. Compare Prices

Retail competition in this market is fierce, so shop around for the best prices. Game (and to a lesser extend) console prices vary wildly from place to place, so doing research in advance and checking prices on-line makes sense. Unless you really need to buy the latest blockbuster on day of its release, wait a month or two - all games are reissued on budget labels and console prices also fall over time.

4. Duck and Dive

Staff at specialist computer games stores are much more likely to have expert knowledge than their equivalents at supermarkets and the like. But if the supermarket is cheaper, don’t be afraid to take advice from one place and buy in another. Also, consider asking the specialist store for a discount if you know the product is available for less elsewhere.

5. Read Expert Reviews

Don’t know your Halos from your Half-Lifes? Websites such as ProductSifter (dot) com, Gamerankings.com and Metacritic.com all have excellent reviews and rankings for a wide range of video console and game products.

6. Test before you buy

Many games shops have in-store demo units, so you can take a game or a console for a test run before you buy. Remember, you can also rent video games or use online clubs like Swapgame.com to cut costs further.

7. Check the age ratings

Every video game should have an age rating. In Europe, the Pan-European Game Information standard is used. It is not legally binding, but offers a clear guide to parents about a game’s suitability for children. Also, any game featuring mature or realistic content is rated by the British Board of Film Classification.

Juiced 2 - Hot Import Nights Video Game

THQ has signed a major co-marketing agreement with mobile media company 3, one of the world's largest mobile network operators.

The 3 agreement allows for the company to be included in THQ’s video game Juiced 2: Hot Import Nights scheduled to release later this Autumn for Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PLAYSTATION3 computer entertainment system, PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system, PSP (PlayStation Portable) system, Nintendo DS and Windows PC.
