Left 4 Dead Update Will Bring Completed SDK, Content Sharing Tools

left 4 dead video gameValve has announced details of an update to Left 4 Dead that is due out next week. To start, the SDK open beta is over, and the final version is being released.

They're also adding a framework for easily sharing player-created content, accessible through the menu system in-game. In addition to that, they're revamping the matchmaking system to accommodate custom campaigns (like this Resident Evil 3 mod).

"Content authors will be able to package up their new maps, along with new posters, models, and textures, into a single .VPK file. To install and activate this content in-game, players need simply download the .VPK and double click on it. ... When creating or searching for a lobby, a new option named 'Add-on campaign' will let you select from among the add-on campaigns that you have installed. You can then find games or lobbies as well as create a lobby for that campaign. You can invite your friends, too. If they do not have the campaign installed, they will automatically be offered and an option to download it."

Is Left for Dead 2 sequel just 'in it' for the money?

left 4 dead video gameOnly recently announced at E3 a few days ago, Left 4 Dead 2 is already causing a stir amongst fans who feel let down by Valve, the development team behind the original and the upcoming sequel. A group of boycotters claim that this sequel is nothing more than a money grabbing opportunity through the success of the original Left 4 Dead game released only 6 months ago.

The group known as ‘L4D2 Boycott (NO-L4D2)’ have set up a protest on the Valve Steam-Software social network system to bring awareness to Valve’s False Promises which the group have also highlighted their issues:

* Significant content for L4D1 was promised, and never delivered.
* Valve put little faith in L4D1 since they almost certainly started working on L4D2 right after release.
* The fact that L4D2 is nearly identical to L4D1 will decimate the community for both games.
* The announced date is not nearly enough time to polish content or make significant gameplay changes.
* The new character designs seem bland and unappealing so far.
* L4D2 is too bright to fit in with L4D1’s visual aesthetic.
* The fiddle-based horde music is extremely disliked, though the differently orchestrated music is otherwise welcome.
* L4D2’s release will result in a drop in quality and frequency for L4D1 content, even compared to before.
* The community has lost faith in Valve’s former reputation for commitment to their games post-release.

The group currently has almost 4500 members and is expecting to increase these numbers as a protest against not only the lack of content promised for the original, but the quick release of the sequel. Do you think this group are justified in their angry claims at Valve, or should they move on and look forward to the sequel due out Nov 17th, which happens to be a year on from the original ‘Left 4 Dead’ release anyway?

Left 4 Dead Download Content coming soon for Xbox 360 and PC

left 4 dead video gameLooks like our four bloodied but unbowed survivors—Louis, Francis, Zoey, and Bill—will live to fight the zombie horde another day, thanks to a downloadable add-on slated for the spring.
I don't know about you, but "Left 4 Dead"—the relentless, blood-soaked, yet slyly tongue-in-cheek survival game—quickly became one of my favorite console zombie-fests upon its release last November.
I have to admit, I spent a little too much time on Christmas Eve leading my rag-tag team through deserted city streets, hospitals, and supermarkets, coldly dispatching the shambling undead with an assortment of shotguns, hunting rifles, automatic weapons, and pipe bombs (much to my wife's disgust, I might add).

So yes, zombie fans—get ready for the Left 4 Dead "Survival Pack," which (according to Wired's Game|Life) should be lurching our way sometime this spring.

Details are pretty scarce for now (here's the official press release); what we do know, however, is that we'll be getting a pair of new campaigns for the L4D "Versus" mode (the four-on-four multiplayer mode that pits humans against creatures), as well as a new multiplayer game, dubbed "Survival." (Similar to the "zombie" mode in Call of Duty: World at War, perhaps? Hmmm…)

Also on tap: A Left 4 Dead software development kit that'll let coders build their own custom campaigns for the PC.

Valve hasn't announced specific dates yet for either the L4D SDK or the "Survival" DLC pack; the development kit will arrive free of charge, but I'm guessing we'll have to pony up for the DLC. Stay tuned.

Left 4 Dead zombie battle on xbox 360 and PC

left 4 dead
Just go on without me!" I shout. I'm pinned to the ground, a swarm of infected stamping on me. I fire blindly into the crowd, trying to help another survivor who's being tongued to death. A stray bullet severs the lengthy, constricting tongue and he runs for the safe house. Someone is in there already, waiting by the door. Norman, I think. Just like him to get away.

As I'm overwhelmed the safe house door is closed. BLAMMO, BANG. "DIE YOU ZOMBIE B*STARDS!" Level over.

Yes, I said "level". For a moment there I was in an '80s action movie, sacrificing my life so that others could live. Left 4 Dead does that to you. It's an entirely new way of playing games with friends.

You and up to three others battle through one of four movie-inspired apocalyptic backdrops, trying to reach safety, and that generates war stories like nothing else I've played. With four players working together against the overwhelming odds, plans are born out of desperation, some meagre supplies and a lot of luck.

Left 4 Dead survival rate published by Valve

left 4 dead
Achievement tracking on Steam shows that only 0.2% of PC players survived all campaigns on Expert.

Valve's Left 4 Dead figures show how gamers have been getting on thanks to Steam's stat tracking abilities.

While no achievement has been earned by all players, there are a few around the 70 per cent mark.

'DRAG AND DROP' which tasks players with rescuing a survivor from a Smoker's tongue before he takes damage has been earned by 72.7 per cent of PC players and is the most earned achievement. 'BRAIN SALAD' - making 100 headshot kills is the second most earned achievement with 69.4 per cent of players seemingly able to point a gun in the face of oncoming zombies.

left 4 dead

The hardest achievements to earn are unsurprisingly 'LAMB 2 SLAUGHTER' - As an Infected, incap a Survivor who has entered and left a safe room, and 'ZOMBIE GENOCIDEST' - kill 53,595 Infected. No PC gamer has managed to earn these achievements.

You'll find the full list of Left 4 Dead achievement stats over on www.steampowered.com.
